Purpose and content of the privacy policy, applicable legal basis
This data protection declaration is intended to give the user (from now on only the female form will be used for better readability) the opportunity to find out what data we collect, for what purposes, where it is stored and what you can do about data that you do not want to make available to us or no longer want to make available to us.
The Alias service is primarily aimed at people resident in Switzerland. For persons residing in the EU, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies. For persons residing in Switzerland, Swiss law (Federal Act on Data Protection, FADP) applies in principle.
Scope of the processing of personal data
We only process personal data to the extent necessary to provide a functional website and its content and services.
Legal basis and storage period
We process personal data in accordance with Swiss data protection law (in particular Art. 12 et seq. of the Federal Act on Data Protection, FADP). In addition, we process – insofar and insofar as the GDPR is applicable – in accordance with Art. 6 para. 1 GDPR lit. a-d and f.
In particular, this means that we process personal data if the user has given their express consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR) or in order to protect our legitimate interests or those of third parties, unless the fundamental freedoms and rights and interests of the user take precedence (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
As a rule, data is only stored for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected. This is subject to deviating requirements by legal provisions that are binding for Alias.
Cookies
Cookies are text files that are stored in the Internet browser or by the Internet browser on the user’s computer system. Our website uses cookies. When a user accesses a website, a cookie may be stored on their operating system. These cookies each contain a characteristic string of characters that enables the browser to be uniquely identified when the website is called up again.
We use so-called session cookies to optimise our online offering. This file does not contain any personal data and is deleted after the user closes the browser.
The user can adjust the settings in the browser they are using so that they are informed in advance about the setting of cookies and can decide in individual cases whether the acceptance of cookies should be excluded for certain cases or in general. This may limit the functionality of the website.
Specifically:
We use the open source web analysis tool ‘Matomo’ (formerly ‘Piwik’) for statistical analysis.
Matomo uses cookies, which enable us to analyse the use of the website and evaluate user behaviour. The user’s IP address is anonymised immediately. The information generated by the cookie about the use of this website is not passed on to third parties.
Provision of the website and creation of log files
When you visit the website, so-called log files are created on the hosting servers of the ZHAW (Zurich University of Applied Sciences). This is done so that the website can be hosted reliably, technically flawlessly and in compliance with the law. The log files contain information such as
– IP addresses
– Date and time
– Protocol information such as protocol type, version, the desired action, status codes or information on the transferred data (e.g. the size of a question or an answer)
– Error messages
– Depending on the application-specific information, such as message IDs for e-mails or, in the case of web access, details of the browser used (user agent string) or, if applicable, the page from which the visitor accessed the website
This applies not only to interactions with websites, but also to all services such as e-mail (SMTP, POP, IMAP), FTP, SSH, etc.
The data remains on the systems until it is no longer required for operational purposes and the legally or contractually stipulated periods have expired, after which it is automatically deleted. For most data, this is a maximum of six months.
Use of contact options via the website (contact form and e-mail)
There is a contact form on our website that can be used to contact us electronically. If a user makes use of this option, the data entered in the input mask will be transmitted to us and stored.
The following data is also stored when the message is sent:
– The user’s IP address
– Date and time of registration
Alternatively, it is possible to contact us via the e-mail address provided. In this case, the user’s personal data transmitted with the e-mail will be stored.
Rights of users of the website affected by data processing
Users are entitled to the rights arising from data protection legislation and, if and insofar as applicable, from the GDPR. These result from Chapter 3 of the GDPR. These are:
– Right to confirmation and information
– Right to rectification
– Right to erasure (‘right to be forgotten’)
– Right to restriction of processing
– Right to data portability
– Right to object
– Right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling
– Right to withdraw consent under data protection law
– Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority
Amendment of this privacy policy
Alias reserves the right to amend this privacy policy at any time. Amendments will be published on the website and enter into force upon publication.
